Vassar Jewish Students Break With Hillel on Israel

NOTE: This and the next article deal with the same topic. What is it that actually creates a "tipping point" in history? Only time will tell, but I'll bet my max bet, a nickel, that for some reason, the "Open Hillel" movement may be the pivot. Students have been hearing about BDS and "Apartheid week" for some time and most probably rolled their eyes, assuming yet another "cute" liberal bandwagon would pass by. After all, there was always Hillel to go back to in case you needed a shabbot candle, a bagel or someplace calm to go and decompress.
But now "Open Hillel" will allow those calm spaces to be crashed by Anti semitic speakers, BDS organizers, Nazi Sympathizers and others who seek the end of the State of Israel. And this will not go down well with those Jewish kids who need a little shelter from the storm.

The Vassar Jewish Union has declared itself an “Open Hillel,” becoming the second organization to break from Hillel International over the parent group’s pro-Israel guidelines.
“We believe that Hillel International’s goal to ‘inspire every Jewish college student to develop a meaningful and enduring relationship to Israel’ does not represent the diverse opinions of young American Jews,” the VJU said in a February 18 statement announcing that it would no longer abide by the Hillel guidelines. “We believe that fostering a pluralistic community and supporting all Jewish life on campus cannot be achieved with Hillel International’s Israel guidelines in place.”
The “Open Hillel” movement joined by the VJU describes itself as “a student-run campaign to encourage inclusivity and open discourse at campus Hillels.” The movement encourages Hillel chapters to reject Hillel International’s Israel guidelines, which prohibit campus Hillels from sponsoring programs, partnering with clubs and hosting speakers who “delegitimize, demonize or apply a double standard to Israel,” or deny its right to exist. The guidelines also bar cooperation with anyone supporting boycotts, divestments or sanctions against the Jewish state.
Last December Swarthmore Hillel became the first school to publicly reject the guidelines.

Have you read or even heard of a single book by any citizen of those countries (who choose to stay there) who says that the 1947-1949 Arab attack on Israel was a mistake? Have you read or even heard of a single book by one of those people that says that the attempt to destroy the just-born Jewish state was morally wrong? Have you read a single book by a committed Palestinian who says that just as the Palestinians have a right to a state, so too do the Jews, and it’s time for Palestinians to recognize Israel as a Jewish state?
Neither have I.

Judith Butler Talk at New York’s Jewish Museum Canceled

That said, Ms. Butler often uses these platforms to digress and talk about a lot of hate-filled and misguided anti-semitic ideas. In cases like Ms. Butler's it is probably best to not allow her a wide berth, or solo performance, but rather a well supervised debate forum where her incorrect ideas can be checked in an appropriate give and take. Left alone she, like others, wander into fact free zones, sounding off in an oddly seductive manner. Let's not ban speakers like her, but rather let us be calm and properly educated and informed and meet these angry folks head on.

LONDON — Secretary of State John Kerry caused outrage in Israel recently when he declared: “For Israel there’s an increasing delegitimization campaign that has been building up. People are very sensitive to it. There is talk of boycotts and other kinds of things. Today’s status quo absolutely, to a certainty, I promise you 100 percent, cannot be maintained. It’s not sustainable. It’s illusionary.”
Members of the Israeli government were indignant. Israel, they declared, will not negotiate under pressure. Advice givers, stay away! But Kerry was only repeating what Israel’s own finance minister, Yair Lapid, had already said: The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (B.D.S.) movement is beginning to bite.

I am getting concerned. The BDS movement and the growing and creeping anti-semitism movements spreading on college campuses is organized and increasingly efficient. We are now seeing sponsored anti-semitic speakers, infiltration of campus Hillel Houses, urging them to dissociate themselves from their national sponsors, which free them up to engage in "discussions" with outside anti-semitic groups.

If you think about your life on campus you may recall occasionally going to a service. Or maybe hanging at Hillel once or twice, or grabbing a bagel or looking for place to go for one of the High Holidays. Or maybe you were one of the two or three "religious" kids. Its even possible you didn't do anything "Jewish" while you were at school. You may not even know now or knew then that there were organizations, formed in the early 2000s and now rapidly growing that were urging professors and students to denounce Israel as an "apartheid" state. Disingenuously stating that they don't mind Jews and really they don't mind Israel but they just want Israel to "abolish their anti-apartheid ways", give full "right of return" for Palestinians and more or less just disappear. No really, we love you Jews, but we think Israel has no right to exist.
In spite of a lot of controversy about settlements, most Israelis and most mainstream Jews understand that peace requires a significant return of some land obtained after 1948. And the creation of TWO STATES, living side by side. Regardless of the fact that the land obtained after 1948 was obtained when all of the surrounding Arab states, who never recognized the UN creation of the state of Israel, attacked Israel with the intent of pushing the Jews into the sea and taking back all the land. Miraculously the young Jewish state was able to not only defend the land but push back. And each time the Arab world attacked, the Jews pushed back.
It is IMPORTANT TO RECALL that at NO TIME did the Jewish State initiate any war or set out to grab any more land. They had agreed to the UN 1948 boundaries.
After some crushing defeats, Egypt agreed to make peace and land was returned by Israel. See? Its easy. But most of the surrounding countries still don't recognize Israel's right to exist. They teach their children Geography using maps that do not include Israel. They don't mention Israel. They teach hatred. But still, most mainstream Arabs when polled will stay say they favor a two state solution.
After losing multiple wars and seeing decades of time wasted on misplaced hate and lies a new strategy was hatched by some. Not a strategy to pursue a lasting peace but a strategy to create a "grass roots" program, loosely based on some non-violent movements in which they would try to infiltrate colleges and universities and convince the kids that Israel was an "apartheid state" repressing Palestinians, and living on their land. They have the nerve to say that all they want is for Israel to obey some esoteric UN resolutions and allow Palestinians full "right of return". Oddly, they NEVER agree to the original UN RESOLUTION which created the State of Israel.
So here we are as February 2014 draws to a close, BDS is clawing its way onto American Colleges and Universities, breaking apart Hillels, interrupting classes, sewing anti-semitism and planting the false seedlings of a "Israel = Apartheid" mindset.
If we sit by, they will continue to grow. We've been busy, being naive and living our lives. And you know what? It would be really nice to be able to go on doing that. But, no, we can't.
So? Start reading, start learning. If you have kids in college, PLEASE talk to them. Talk to your college Rabbi. Talk to your local synagogues. Get involved. We'll do our best to keep clipping and posting. If you have something you want to share, let me know. But please, don't do nothing.
